Literal Interpretation: the direct interpretation of the Bible as fact. The belief that everything in the Bible happened exactly as it is written.
Contextual Interpretation: interpreting the Bible for its underlying meaning and messages, lessons, teachings, etc. (reading “between the lines”).
- Hermeneutics: text interpretation based on world changes. Examines the context (time, culture) within which text is written in an attempt to extract understanding.
- Exegesis: the critical explanation or interpretation of a text, especially of scripture; to “draw out” the meaning of scripture.
Catechism of the Catholic Church: the official collection of Catholic teachings, often written in question and answer form, which interprets the Bible contextually.
